Many of his very young patients had trouble pronouncing “Waldman.” Most simply shouted, in their high-pitched little voices, “Dr. Deane!” Dr. Deane!”
After education and post-graduate training at Yale (BA in History), Chicago Medical School (MD), Anderson Graduate School of Business (MBA), Mayo Clinic, Northwestern, and Harvard, Dr. Deane practiced pediatric cardiology for nearly four decades. He was the Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at San Diego Children’s Hospital, University of Chicago, and University of New Mexico.
After finishing a procedure, I found “Alex” in this long, dreary, totally empty corridor slowly exploring all by himself without a care. He happily accepted my finger as I led him to my office and called Security to relieve his (obviously) frantic parents.
Dr. Deane discovered that while he loved caring for babies and children with heart problems, he resented the obstacles the system imposed while he was trying to care for his patients. Over time, he discovered that most nurses and doctors felt the same way: loved the work, hated the system in which they had to do it.
After decades of frustration Dr. Deane applied his business knowledge to study why healthcare, viewed as a patient, was so sick. He found the root cause – ineffective money flow – but needed a finance expert to work out a “cure” for healthcare.
That is where Dr. Vance Ginn came in.

Dr. Vance Ginn met Dr. Waldman at Texas Public Policy when they were Directors of the Centers for Economics and Healthcare Policy respectively. After numerous discussions, it became clear that together they could create a “cure” for healthcare that would provide affordable, readily accessible medical care for all Americans, whom they liked to call We the Patients.

Both Dr. Deane and Dr. Ginn welcome the chance to communicate with We the Patients, singly if you prefer, or in groups: large or small, from the PTA and your community association to large organizations or companies like National Organization of Women or Walmart.
